  • Scottish Terrier Scottie
  • Up-to-date with routine shots
UPDATE ON SUSI on 12/6/17: Susi is pregnant and too far along for us to spay her so she is going to have to have the babies, raise them and then get spayed before she will be looking for a home. It will February before Susie is available for adoption. On palpation the vet thinks she is only carrying a couple of pups. Susi is a Scottish Terrier who is about 7 years old. She has not had the best that life has to offer. She was a pet for the first two years of her life and then she got sold into a breeding situation where she spent the next 5 years with someone raising money off of her continiously having puppies. She got released by the breeder because she was getting too old to keep on breeding (gee go figure) and then came to us. Low and behold - we believe she is pregnant. She will be going into the vet this week and if she isn't pregnant or isn't too far along she will be spayed. Keep your fingers crossed that we can get her fixed - she doesn't need the responsibility of another litter of puppies - she has been put through that enough in her life. She is a little shy but no aggression. Our guess would be she is not housebroken but if she was when she was a "pet" it may be fairly easy to re-train her. So far she hasn't had any accidents in her kennel. She is very quiet. This poor baby deserves more out of life than nursing babies - we are hoping to find her a home that will teach her that humans aren't all monsters and she will get lots of loving. Once she is in the vet next week we will have more answers.

May is a Boxer mix (probably with Lab) who was surrendered by an individual who was apparently breeding boxers. She was surrendered in Texas along with six other Boxer's. Due to the fact that she is pregnant they had no where for her to go so they reached out to us to take her to avoid her having to be euthanized. She is one very confused young girl right now. She is only a year old - so we have a baby getting ready to have babies - urrrr. When will people learn to spay/neuter their animals? The good thing is that she is heartworm negative so she won't have to undergo that in addition to a litter of puppies. She will be here with us for a while but we wanted you to meet her. She is a very sweet girl who will eventually be looking for a home to call her own.

Still guards her food and doesn't want the other dog by her crate. So possibly an only dog home but does play great with my other dogs one her size and the other a big rottie! She comes when called and loves to run in the fence. On leash she is an easy walker! Just shys away from loud noises and cars. All and all she is a sweetie that will fit in great with a family!

She would be an excellent family member for an active family or a great jogging partner for an active individual. She is not wired for an inactive life. She gets along great with everyone and everything. She is good with dogs her own size or larger - not good with small dogs or cats. She is, for the most part, housebroken but will require some reinforcement of that in a new home. She came out of an overcrowded location in Corpus Christy, Texas and is looking for a forever home here in our area. . Baxter .
  • Newfoundland Dog
  • Spayed/Neutered
  • Up-to-date with routine shots
UPDATED INFO: This is Baxter - he came into us a couple of weeks ago. He is an 18 month old Newfie. He has a beautiful Chocolate colored coat. He came out of a situation where the other dog in the home may have been dominant over him. Now that he is no longer in that situation we want to tell you what we are seeing so we make sure we find the right home for him. First, he is beautiful, friendly, does well with adults and kids - just a little rough so without meaning to he may knock smaller kids down. He isn't having any issues being in the shelter and is listening very well. He spent a few days out in a foster home and has been back to the shelter since he had a vet visit as he apparently ate something he shouldn't have and we needed to verify it was passing and not stuck. So anyone who ends up adopting him needs to carefully monitor him with toys. What we are seeing though is that he is showing signs of trying to be dominant with other male dogs. Not so much female dogs - but definitely with male dogs (even ones that are neutered). So far it has not moved past just posturing and have taken him fairly quickly out of the situation to avoid anything happening beyond just the puffing of the chest and the standing over the other male dog. We do not believe he would be trustworthy with a small dog. He is not housebroken and wants to hike his leg on anything that is stationary. That can be solved with work. He gets neutered on Wednesday 11/22 and although it will take time for the testosterone level to drop after his neuter we believe that marking habit can be overcome with the right amount of work on the part of a forever family. We are hoping the dominance issue will diminish some once he has been neutered for a while. He is very social and loves attention. He is doing very well with not jumping on people (which is a good thing because of his size). He has a good appetite and is pretty gentle taking treats. The idea home for Baxter would be as a single dog (preferably prior Newfie owner) or one other large or giant breed female dog. Someone who is patient enough to work through the housebreaking. He is doing very well here at the shelter if let out at regular intervals and you don't let him stop while going down the hall to hike. He would probably do best with a fenced in yard as he isn't completely leash trained (he is doing better but still not 100% there). He is doing better about getting into a vehicle but still does put on the brakes and has to be persuaded to get into a vehicle. He is here at the shelter for visitors this coming weekend - if you have what it takes to adopt Baxter, please complete an adoption application which you will find on our website at www.patriotsforpets.com

We were told mom was a German Shepherd - obviously we have no idea what daddy is. We are estimating them at about 5 weeks right now. They are out to foster as they really required a ton of extra care learning to eat and getting their flea problem under control. There are two girls and three boys. Carly is still very much a puppy and she is probably a German Shepherd mix. Her date of birth is 12/15/16. She is very sweet and a very smart dog. We have her in with another dog her size and they get along great. She was surrendered because she is not a fan of Chicken, Ducks and apparently cats too. She has a prey drive and because no one worked with it as a puppy it is now a situation where she can't live with small animals. She is housebroken, knows her basic commands and absolutely loves to play. She has lived with kids and no issues were reported with that. She is full of energy and needs to learn some more basic manners - like not jumping on you. She is ready to go home now, spayed, current on shots, heartworm negative and micro-chipped. This is Debra. She is a German Shepherd and she is 3 1/2 years old. Historically she was a therapy dog for a Wounded Warrior. After that she ended up in a situation that no dog should endure. We are trying to stay positive so will say nothing more about her last few months. She has lost most of her basic training unless you are firm with her - she will definitely need a refresher obedience class. She has a VERY HIGH prey drive - ducks, geese, chickens, cats, rabbits, etc., are all OFF LIMITS FOR HER. She is high energy and will therefore require a large fenced in yard of no less than 5 feet high - preferably 6 feet. She is too rough for small children - so no children under probably about 12. She does do well with dogs her own size or bigger and we would have to do an extensive meet and greet to assure everyone got along. She isn't a very big girl at about 60 lbs. She listens to men better than women. She is strong and we are seeing a stubborn streak in her that a refresher obedience class should help with. She REALLY would do best in a home that is experienced with German Shepherds - this is not a dog for a novice dog owner. We won't even consider an application that has not had experience with hard to handle breeds. She has not had a good few months and will require time, love, patience and a firm hand (not a cruel one - just firm).

This is Jasmine - she is about a year old. It will be a while before she is ready to go home as she is Heartworm positive. Here is the write-up from her foster mom: Sweet Jasmine is our 1 yr old Texas foster. Housebroken, friendly, good with our large dogs, and knows how to use sad eyes to get extra attention. She's heartworm positive and will receive treatment soon. She is not good with cats or small dogs, and actively hunts ours, who are safely in the basement when Jasmine is loose in the house. She's okay with the over 30 lb dogs, but likes to dominate. She's crated at night, and stays quiet. Loves to be brushed. She freaks out when someone plays with a squeaky toy, so I would be hesitant to have her around small, squealing children.

 . Stan .
  • Rottweiler, Labrador Retriever
  • Spayed/Neutered
  • Up-to-date with routine shots
This is Stan. He is one of the Texas Rescue dogs. He is shown as a 5 year old Rottweiler/lab mix. Here is what his foster mom had to say about him: Stan is the biggest of our Texas rescue fosters at about 90 lbs. He's a puller, and very strong, but with a no-pull harness, he walks very well. I think he may have been an outside dog, and don't believe he's housebroken. Does not like other dogs by his food. He gets along well with mild mannered Smokey, but hates busy Bob. At 5 yrs old, he would probably do best as an only dog. He barks alot when he sees us in the yard and wants attention, but does not bark at our neighbors.

This is Stella. She is an awesome dog. Good with other dogs, has been with small dogs, but if they run-she will chase them. No cats. She loves chasing squirrels. She can jump fences-so need a tall fence-very athletic. Good with kids over 8 yrs old, and is great to walk on a leash. Knows sit. She is housebroken and sleeps on a dog bed. She's great in the car. She is on grain free dog food. She is spayed, current on all shots, heartworm negative, current on preventatives and micro-chipped. She is on Proin (which will be sent home with her). After she was spayed, sometimes she would leak while sleeping-which can be common. The vet said it is a hormone imbalance. She has done great with it and right now she is getting it every other day. Could be ok with every third day. It is not an expensive drug. Her adoption fee is $175.00. Our adoption application is on our website at www.patriotsforpets.com and we recommend you fill that out if you are interested in a pet here at Patriots.

Sassie is about a year old and she is a lab (mix). Unfortunately she was dumped a couple of months ago and it has taken this long to get her captured. She is still very scared of people but is starting to come around slowly. There is no aggression, only fear, with humans. She is a beautiful girl just looking for someone to love her. Unfortunately the vet says she is pregnant and too far along to go ahead and spay - so she will be with us for a while.

Sammy is under 2 years old. He came to us in early January absolutely terrified of humans. He would bite when he was terrified. He has come a LONG LONG way since then. He will now come up to his gate and allow people to gently touch him. He goes in and out without having to be on a leash and forced to go outside. He is now curious about humans and has gotten very good with the regular volunteers here at PFP. He is housebroken. He will require a quiet home with someone who is VERY patient and will just wait for him to be curious enough to seek attention. We know that adoption will set him back a little bit but it is time to start looking for his very own home. He isn't a real big boy - about 35 pounds. His breed is anyone's guess.

 . Roscoe .
 . Roscoe .
  • German Shepherd Dog
  • Spayed/Neutered

  • Prefers home without cats
Roscoe found himself in not so good of a place when his owner surrendered him to a shetler that can't hang onto dogs for very long. He was surrendered because he nipped at the kids when they pulled his tail. He has been with us since January 2017. He has to be introduced to other dogs slowly but once he trusts them he does amazing. He loves - loves - loves his toys and plaing fetch. He does not do well with cats. He would probably be best with kids over the age of 10 so they will be a little more respectful. He is housebroken, crate trained, neutered, current on his shots, heartworm negative and micro-chipped. He does not show well in his kennel - so to visit Roscoe you need to be willing to spend a little time with him and once he meets people he is their best friend. He has a sponsor for part of his adoption fee so right now adoption fee is only $100.00.

This is Ragnar - he was originally with us last year and has been returned. We are not even sure where to start in describing him. We have a 8 page report from his adopters describing him. There are tons and tons of good stuff on him and what a wonderful dog he is - but he is described as having a Jekyll and Hyde personality. He will do great and then all of sudden turn on someone that he knows or was just loving up to. Unfortunately in a home with children, family and friends the changing of personalities did not work. Since we have seen none of the unwanted behavior here we aren't even positive what to look for in an adopter. He is only two years old - has been to trainers who have not seen the issue so can't even begin to advise on additional things to try. The behavior exists and rears it's ugly head when least expected. About 80% of the time he appears good with other dogs and then all of a sudden that goes bad. He was originally shown as a Retriever mix but some of the behavior being described leads us to believe there is some Chow in there. For anyone interested in meeting Ragnar we will require they read the write up on him from the prior owner. Unfortunately with his bite history we will only get one final shot at finding him the right home. We hope one is out there. We "think" a single man or woman who can demonstrate they are in charge, that has very little company and strangers through the home would be best. He will also need to be the only dog. He will also need a fenced in yard to avoid having trouble with neighbor dogs.

This is Pebbles - she is just a year old and is probably a Pit mixed with something smaller. She isn't a very big girl. She is super friendly and wants to be everyone's friend. Unfortunatly at her young age she came into us with a litter of puppies that she refused to take care of. We made the decision to pull her remaining babies and hand feed them and just wean her from them to keep her from continuing to reject them. She is a super sweet girl - just very young to have the responsibility of puppies. She is spayed, heartworm negative, current on her shots, wormed and micro-chipped. She loves kids and around here she hasn't met a stranger. She gets along with other dogs, loves kids and adults. She has not been cat tested. He is a very sweet boy. He gets along with other dogs. We have no information on how he is with cats. He doesn't seem to have any problems with men, women or children. We believe he is housebroken - he has not had one accident since he has been here. We have had him to the vet he is neutered, current on all of his shots, heartworm tested negative and micro-chipped. He is just missing a family that will love him and not dump him in the future. He is a big boy at 84 lbs. His adoption fee is $175.00. UPDATED INFO ON JAKE Some of you may remember Jake's story from November. This boy is 11 - he is HW positive and not strong enough for heavy treatment. He has lived his entire life tied up in a filthy dirty location with only a falling down shed for shelter and tied up on a chain. He had the chain on for... so many years that he had open raw sores around his neck. Additionally he was so thin you could count all of his ribs. We have never been able to find the right foster for Jake so he is living... with us at the shelter. He has come a LONG way since November. Living in the shelter isn't the idea life for him but it is a whole lot better than what he came out of. He has gained the weight he needed. We are doing slow HW treatment - which won't solve the problem but hopefully keep it from getting worse. He will never be adoptable. He is not neutered and with his heartworm that makes his outlook for life not perfect but he is loved here at the shelter, he gets attention from the staff regularly, he has good food and gets all of his needs tended to. He has become an overall healthy dog with the exception of his heartworm. He has a couple of quirks - he is not a fan of young children - they want to hug him and he goes NUTS when you do that. He doesn't like having his neck scratched or rubbed - that would be from 11 long years living on a chain. He will bite if you hug him or rub his neck the wrong way. He is NOT good with strangers. He takes a while to warm up. He is amazing with all of the volunteers around here that have spent the time to get to know him slowly. We have not given up on finding him a foster home to live out the balance of his senior years. We know he gets along with female dogs but not when it comes to food - he does protect that and we know that is because for 11 years he never got what was needed. He has done amazing with housebreaking and has not had any accidents in his kennel in about 3 months. We are very proud of the progress Jake has made. The upper left picture is when he came to us - the other two are now. A big thanks to those who have occasionally sent us a check to help pay for Jakes good senior food - it has been a tremendous help. Keep Jake in your thoughts and prayers.

Duke is 3 years old and is probably a Boxer mix. His family could no longer keep him due to a family member developing severe allergies. He is a great dog. He is housebroken, good with kids, bonds fairly quickly to his humans. He is neutered, current on his shots, heartworm negative and micro-chipped. He has lots of energy. If you are looking for a great dog but don't want to go through all of the puppyhood, Duke might be just the right fit. He is about 55 lbs. A little shy with other dogs to begin with. Has never lived with a cat. Has lived with kids. Is not great with men that he doesn't know but once he knows them life is good. Consider coming out to meet Duke. This beautiful girl is Destiny. She is one of the Texas flood rescues. This sweet girl looks to have had a rough life. She is very thin and needs weight put on her. She appears to have had more than one litter of pups. She is also heart worm positive. So she will be going through the treatment for them. Destiny is 3 years old and not sure her breed. She has eyes that will melt your heart. Destiny has done very well in the home setting and appears to be housebroke. No accidents so far. I do kennel her at night otherwise she has free reign of the house. She is very gentle and cannot get enough love. You can tell she has not had much of that in her life. Destiny does well with the other dogs and loves to play with them. Her self esteem is not so high. She surrenders to the ground and on her back if she thinks she is in trouble or even playing with the other dogs. She does good on the leash and has no problem with the cats. She also loves to stretch out on the couch. She is in a foster home and the above description is from her foster mom.

This beautiful girl is Delilah - she is about 17 months old and unfortunately she has already had a litter of pups. She does fine with male dogs (have not tried female dogs) but she is pretty bossy for her age. She also bonds VERY quickly to her human so that is something that needs to be taken into consideration when adopting her. She is housebroken and gets along with all humans. No cats for this one. She is a Texas Blue Lacey so make sure if you are interested in her do your research on the breed. We don't see many of them in our area.

Chubba is still very young. His DOB is 2/13/17. He is a lab/dalmation mix. He lived a miserable six months here on this earth before coming to us and our goal to make the rest of his life a good one. He was "dumped" way before he was old enough to care for himself. He ended up in an area that was filled with Porcupine and had the needles all over his body - especially his face. He had to be live trapped to get him. He was absolutely terrified and is still leary of humans but is coming around vey slowly. It took almost two months for his sores to heal and for him to "tolerate" being touched but he is doing better - all physical wounds are healed and he is now coming to the gates looking for attention. He requires a loving and PATIENT home. He is not a "love you to death" type of puppy. You will have to earn that love through lots and lots of patience. He does great with other dogs and is starting to be curious about all of the attention they get. He would probably be best in a home with another dog to help him finish coming out of his shell (a non-aggressive dog of course). He doesn't have a mean bone in his body but as with any fearful dog - he could bite - so therefore no young children for this beautiful baby. He is afraid to eat with another dog near by so will require an area where he can be fed by himself. His adoption fee is $100.00. If you think you have the patience and love for this young guy, please go to our website and complete an adoption application you will find that at www.patriotsforpets.com He is neutered, current on his shots, heartworm negative and micro-chipped.

Ms. Bella is a lab mix who is still very much a puppy. Her DOB is 1/14/17.. She got to come to the shelter to find a new home when she had a UTI and by day three the medication wasn't working so she ended up here with us. Well, we did the full round of medication on her and now no problems and she is looking for a forever home. She is a sweet girl with lots of energy. She gets along great with other dogs. She loves kids. She seems to ignore our kennel cat when she is loose and comes across the cat. She is a little shy when she first meets someone but warms up quickly.
